Born into a Jewish family in 1891, Edith Stein became one of the twentieth century’s most significant Catholic intellectuals. A student of Husserl and a brilliant phenomenologist in her own right, she converted to Catholicism in 1922, entered Carmel as Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and was ultimately martyred at Auschwitz in 1942. She was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
